being said have a great day at church
00:06
well it is Christmas time and that means
00:10
it is time for your favorite holiday
00:13
traditions traveling and shopping right
00:16
those are the things we tend to find
00:19
ourselves doing the most this time of
00:21
year in our house I know there’s eggnog
00:23
that needs drinking and trees that needs
00:25
insulin and pickles that need hiding you
00:28
heard me right
00:29
pickles that need hiding that’s one of
00:32
our Christmas traditions our Christmas
00:35
tree is a hodgepodge of ornaments some
00:37
that are elegant some that are silly
00:39
some that are new some that are very old
00:42
family heirlooms some that are handmade
00:45
by our kids but our tree is never
00:47
complete without the most strange
00:50
ornament on it and that is the Christmas
00:53
time pickle some of you might observe
00:55
this tradition some of you might not
00:58
have a clue of what I am talking about
01:01
when most people think about Christmas
01:02
they certainly don’t think of pickles
01:05
after all that’s not a very common
01:07
Christmas tradition is it but this
01:10
particular tradition is based on two
01:12
different legends ones which originates
01:15
from Germany another which originates
01:17
from the Civil War in which a Union
01:19
soldiers survived on nothing more than
01:22
pickles and then saw afterward as good
01:25
luck and people according to the lore
01:27
started to ornament their trees for that
01:30
very reason now of course neither of
01:32
these two legends have any real traction
01:35
I have no idea why we do this in our
01:37
house however we put a pickle on the
01:41
tree and on Christmas morning the first
01:43
kid who finds that pickle gets an extra
01:48
so it can be very competitive looking
01:51
for this particular ornaments I love
01:54
that tradition nostalgic traditions and
01:56
Factor just a part of what we do here in
01:58
the holiday season it’s something that
02:01
makes our Christmas merry and bright it
02:03
reminds us of loved ones who have passed
02:04
away it reminds us of our childhood
02:07
there is a legacy in a sense in which we
02:10
get to pass on something that belongs to
02:13
us to another generation this year I
02:16
want to propose to you that you begin in
02:19
your household a brand new family
02:21
tradition a new tradition if you haven’t
02:24
had it already start a new one and this
02:26
is it I want you to attend Christmas Eve
02:29
services here at Ben Davis Christian
02:31
Church what’s more I want you to invite
02:33
friends and family to our services just
02:37
a month ago when we first filmed those
02:39
announcement videos we only had two
02:40
Christmas Eve services but we’ve since
02:43
added a third so we’re gonna be having
02:45
Christmas Eve services at 2:30 4:30 and
02:48
11:00 p.m. this time of year I am so
02:51
excited about our Christmas Eve services
02:55
we’re gonna pull out all the stops
02:56
they’re gonna be great for people of all
02:59
ages your children too so make sure that
03:02
you’re circling Christmas Eve on your
03:03
calendar not just to go to Grandma’s
03:05
house but to be here worshiping with
03:07
friends and family now I want you to
03:10
know one reason why we made a change a
03:13
few years ago from a 7 p.m. service to a
03:15
2:30 and a 4:30 service there’s a lot of
03:19
research that shows the most populous
03:21
attended Christmas Eve services red the
03:25
most popular attended Christmas Eve
03:27
services happen between the hours of
03:29
1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. between 1:00
03:31
p.m. and 5:00 p.m. and so we wanted to
03:34
make our services as available to as
03:36
many people in our congregation as
03:38
possible after all most of us especially
03:41
the younger we get as a church are gonna
03:43
be off to relatives house about 6 or 7
03:45
p.m. and not available here to worship
03:48
we also didn’t want to leave out an
03:50
evening crowd we wanted to make sure
03:52
everybody had a touch point to be here
03:54
on Christmas Eve and so
03:55
we added a nostalgic midnight mass to
03:58
the mix which I’m really excited about
04:00
that 11:00 p.m. service because we were
04:02
literally going to sing in Christmas I
04:05
don’t know about you but that’s really
04:07
exciting to me so I’m excited to be here
04:09
at all three of those services not just
04:11
because it’s my job but because I love
04:13
Christmas time okay and I want you to be
04:15
here with me too
04:16
second I want to challenge you to invite
04:18
friends and family because you know what
04:20
this is the one time of year in which we
04:22
still observe traditions studies also
04:24
show that we are most open to change at
04:27
this time of the year and most receptive
04:31
to going to church even more so than
04:33
Easter time and so your friends and your
04:35
family they are just waiting on an
04:37
invitation from you just to say hey come
04:39
to church with me this means a lot I
04:41
love my church I want you to come and
04:44
celebrate with me on Christmas Eve and I
04:46
bet if you would do that for a few
04:47
friends you would find a couple people
04:49
who would really be interested in
04:51
joining you so start a new tradition be
04:53
here to 34:30 11:00 p.m. invite family
04:57
and friends we are gonna have a great
04:58
time it’s even going to snow that night
05:01
and you all know how much I love snow
05:02
right so it’s gonna snow that night it’s
05:05
going to be fantastic okay speaking of
05:08
starting something new we’re gonna start
05:10
a new sermon series today it’s called
05:12
best Christmas ever and I’m so excited
05:15
about what we’re gonna be talking about
05:17
for the next few weeks because we’re
05:19
just simply gonna unpack some very
05:21
practical ways that you and I can make
05:24
this season all about Jesus and fine
05:27
that it was the best Christmas in your
05:30
memory I’m excited about this and so be
05:32
here for the next few weeks as we talked
05:35
about that last week we have the Polar
05:37
Express night at our church we brought
05:39
in a ton of our community 1,500 people
05:43
showed up to our Polar Express night
05:46
from the community we were so excited
05:48
about that to welcome those people here
05:49
to shine bright to love on their kids it
05:51
was an absolutely amazing Eve
05:55
that we had of course we had so many
05:57
kids it meant that we were left with a
05:59
ton of letters to Santa Claus we had a
06:02
post office Chris McGowan ran that she
06:07
was the postmaster I suppose over there
06:09
and and all the boys and girls got the
06:12
opportunity to write a letter to Santa
06:14
and so of course we come Monday we have
06:18
what a pile of letters and what do you
06:21
do with a pile of letters written by all
06:24
these kids you know an address to the
06:26
North Pole our children’s ministry Terry
06:28
was wailing this massive cart piled high
06:32
of letters and she’s like Ryan I don’t
06:34
know what to do with this you know I
06:36
can’t possibly read every one of these
06:38
but I want to honor these children you
06:40
know I don’t want to dump them and so I
06:42
said let me help you because I’m noble
06:45
like that so I just took one letter off
06:47
the pile
06:47
I took one letter off the pile and I
06:50
opened it up and started to read it and
06:53
I found out actually that it was a
06:55
letter written by my daughter what are
06:58
the chances now that big pile I pull out
07:01
Kerrigan genes letter I I was so excited
07:04
about that and I read it and she said
07:06
dear Santa for Christmas I want an
07:09
American Girl doll because she gets her
07:12
expensive tastes from her mom you know
07:14
and
07:15
and and and then then this is what she
07:18
says she said and for my family to have
07:22
a great Christmas and that just meant
07:25
the world to me right like I loved it I
07:28
just warm my heart that she’s got two
07:30
Christmas wishes man she wants a doll
07:32
and she wants her family to have a great
07:34
Christmas and so of course for me as a
07:36
father I’m thinking like how can I honor
07:38
that how can I make sure that we have
07:40
the best Christmas ever
07:44
well I want to make a proposition to you
07:46
today how you and your family can have
07:48
the best Christmas ever here’s
07:50
proposition one of our four for the next
07:53
four weeks first is to collect
07:55
experiences not things collect more
07:59
experiences collect less things collect
08:05
experiences not things just a few years
08:10
ago Lynn and I were taking bags full of
08:13
toys to the goodwill and Avon we were
08:16
hauling toys there about April or May
08:19
and there were many toys that we had
08:22
bought at Christmastime where our kids
08:24
had been given at Christmas time you
08:27
know toys that we decided we were not
08:29
gonna replace the batteries in toys that
08:31
frankly our kids never played with or
08:34
they stopped playing with and reverted
08:36
back to their favorite toys and we’re
08:38
hauling these bags full of toys and we
08:41
started thinking what are we doing we’re
08:44
spending so much time and energy on
08:46
buying gifts there’s so much more that
08:49
we want for our children and so Lynn and
08:52
I we made this pact that became our
08:54
holiday mantra and since has really
08:57
become a mantra for us throughout most
08:59
most of the year we want as a family to
09:02
collect experiences we want valuable
09:06
quality family lesson learning time with
09:10
our children we collect experiences not
09:14
things collect experiences not things so
09:17
in other words we made a commitment
09:20
not to buy these big extravagant gifts
09:22
for our kids we might buy them a simple
09:25
toy and then we might go do something
09:27
like invest in an event and give our
09:30
kids some tickets on Christmas morning
09:31
because we want to value family you know
09:34
so we would give them tickets to an
09:36
event and say hey we’re gonna do this as
09:38
a family we’re gonna go here we’re gonna
09:39
see that and along the way we’re gonna
09:42
be together you know and we’re gonna
09:44
learn lessons and you people who have
09:46
teenagers right now you’re like oh he’s
09:47
so naive right like that’s what you’re
09:49
all thinking but I know this for this
09:52
moment in time like we just began to see
09:55
the value of spending time we realized
09:58
that what our children longed for was
09:59
our presence not more gifts not more
10:03
Christmas presence but our presence our
10:05
time in these moments more in the car
10:07
you know we’re talking and we’re loving
10:10
each other and we’re pointing these kids
10:12
to Jesus and we’re teaching them lessons
10:13
about life and we began to desire to
10:17
collect experiences not things another
10:19
way we would do that is that each
10:20
holiday season you know we would make
10:22
some kind of family mission we would do
10:24
something we would set apart some of our
10:27
income we’d set apart some of our time
10:28
our efforts our influence and rather
10:31
than you know going and buying a bunch
10:32
of gifts and getting lost in the
10:34
Christmas shuffle we would invest in
10:37
someone else and so this past year many
10:39
of you helped our heathco family give
10:41
away coats to refugees we got so many
10:43
people to give us so many coats and we
10:45
went got coats and bought coats and made
10:47
sure that a whole apartment complex of
10:49
refugees and Speedway were taken care of
10:52
that they were warm this winter is one
10:54
way that my family decided to collect
10:56
experiences not thanks I want to
11:00
challenge you in this for just a moment
11:02
because I believe with all my heart as a
11:04
pastor as a man as a father as a husband
11:08
that we have lost the meaning of
11:10
Christmas because of all of the
11:13
consumption that surrounds us in the
11:15
Christian tradition Christmas is the
11:17
celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ
11:19
it’s the day
11:20
that we remember a heavenly King not
11:22
born in opulence not born in some mighty
11:25
stronghold or a castle but in a little
11:27
tiny barn to a teenage mom who had just
11:31
months ago been unmarried and shunned
11:34
it’s ultimately the culmination of
11:36
Advent a tradition in which we remind
11:38
ourselves what it’s like to wait on
11:41
something right what it’s like to not
11:44
live in a culture of overconsumption and
11:47
instant gratification we in it at Advent
11:52
time we remind ourselves that God’s
11:54
kingdom has a different set of values a
11:57
different economy in which wealth looks
12:00
entirely different and ultimately the
12:03
value of Christmases that God came to
12:05
man right that our God didn’t say you’ve
12:08
got to come to me and here are all these
12:10
hoops you’ve got to jump through if you
12:13
want to be right with me our God just
12:15
said hey look I’m gonna come to you
12:17
I’m gonna lay myself down my life for
12:21
you because I love you that much and
12:23
what’s more I’m gonna make it simple all
12:25
you have to do is just believe just
12:27
believe and respond in faith and
12:30
obedience and that’s enough for you to
12:32
have this connection for me so here at
12:34
Ben Davis Christian Church we teach
12:35
people that you should believe in Christ
12:37
so you wanna you want to come near to
12:38
God the guy that’s come near to you and
12:40
responds him then you put your faith in
12:42
him you you say Jesus I believe in you I
12:44
accept you as my savior and you respond
12:46
in obedience by being baptized because
12:48
that’s what God is commander to you
12:50
that’s our first act of faith and so
12:52
here we have the seasoned Emmanuel which
12:54
means God with us but in our modern
12:57
cultural adaptation of the Christmas
13:00
tradition it’s become a lot more about
13:03
consumption less about celebration less
13:05
about Christ and more about consumption
13:08
in fact we even have a holiday to kick
13:12
off our Christmas season in America you
13:14
know what it’s called
13:15
Black Friday somebody’s on it they were
13:17
in first service all right so Black
13:20
Friday it kicks off our consumption
13:22
season our Christmas season we’re all
13:24
excited you know to go and and buy
13:27
waffle makers for $9.99 you know when
13:31
people are ripping toys and Technology
13:35
out of each other’s hands there’s a
13:36
picture of what a good Black Friday
13:38
looks like I watched some videos online
13:40
this year because I chose not to go
13:42
Black Friday and this year just wasn’t
13:44
ready for the crowd but I watched a
13:46
video in Missouri I’m a Walmart that had
13:49
been barricaded you know metal crowd
13:51
control fencing and the storm of people
13:54
just bulldoze over all that crowd
13:57
control fencing went running into
14:00
Walmart and if I’d been that manager I’d
14:02
just lock the door but like no not today
14:04
you’re all gonna learn a lesson right
14:06
like what are people do the thing about
14:08
this for a second right like that’s what
14:11
starts our Christmas season a date all
14:13
about shopping all about deals and a lot
14:17
of cases all about overspending
14:18
that’s what inaugurates it for us and it
14:21
points our mind to this materialistic
14:23
time of the year and you not get lost in
14:25
the shuffle of consumption in the
14:27
acquisition the acquiring of more stuff
14:30
these two holidays these two Christmases
14:32
may share the same date on the calendar
14:35
but they could not be any more different
14:36
which is why I think you and I need to
14:38
lean in this morning and I think we need
14:41
to take Jesus warning with a great sense
14:45
of importance and urgency Jesus in the
14:48
Book of Luke chapter 12 verse 15 this is
14:52
what he says beware not when Jesus tells
14:55
you to look out for something guys he’s
14:57
being serious right like he this is not
15:00
hyperbole this is not exaggeration Jesus
15:03
is telling us something important here
15:04
he says beware guard against every kind
15:07
of greed in other words greed is not
15:09
just one-size-fits-all it comes in many
15:11
different shapes shades and sizes so you
15:13
might not
15:14
sitter yourself a greedy person today
15:16
but Jesus would say think again because
15:18
there’s all different kinds of greed
15:20
knocking on our door listen just last
15:22
name of Jesus in fact I’d love it if
15:23
you’d read it with me this last sentence
15:25
ready life is not measured by how much
15:28
you own boy what do you think about that
15:32
there’s a reality check for you and I
15:35
living in the 21st century America right
15:38
life is not measured by how much you own
15:42
for that matter if we were to restate
15:44
and apply what Jesus said we might state
15:46
it like this a Merry Christmas is not
15:48
measured by the gifts you get or the
15:51
gifts you give a Merry Christmas is not
15:54
measured by the gifts you get or for
15:57
that matter the gifts you give so this
16:01
morning I want to talk about how you and
16:02
I can recenter ourselves I want to talk
16:05
about how we can make the season about
16:07
Jesus again and how we can find joy and
16:10
depth and meaning that will carry us for
16:13
the rest of the year of course that all
16:14
is easier said than done right because
16:16
you and I we are bombarded by a world of
16:19
advertisers in fact in this season from
16:21
about Black Friday to Christmas Day you
16:23
will on average see watch here have in
16:27
some way conveyed to you about 200
16:30
commercial ads a day 200 commercial ads
16:34
a day for the moment you wake out of bed
16:37
you know to the moment you get in the
16:39
car to the moment you drive down the
16:40
work to the moment you shuffle back and
16:42
pick up the kids like your entire day is
16:45
bombarded with advertising not to
16:48
mention there’s a whole lot of pressure
16:49
that we put on ourselves to give bigger
16:52
better and best some of us we size up
16:56
our gifts you know for our kids on other
16:59
people’s gifts for their kids you know
17:01
there’s a guy that guy who always buys
17:04
his wife the perfect gift the biggest
17:07
gift the most expensive gift and then we
17:10
give our wives smaller gifts that pale
17:12
in comparison and we feel like dog me we
17:16
put all this pressure on ourselves
17:18
what’s more maybe you’re blessed to have
17:19
some great gift givers in your
17:22
namely and you put this pressure on
17:23
yourself to match their gift it doesn’t
17:26
give you joy you’re just stressed out
17:28
trying to match their generosity we put
17:32
a lot of pressure on ourselves in
17:34
addition to all the pressure that
17:36
marketers put on us you know IKEA the
17:39
big Swedish furniture store on our north
17:41
east side well representatives of IKEA
17:44
have traveled across the globe to ask
17:46
people about their domestic experiences
17:49
and expectations and so in 2016 they
17:53
visited 12 different countries they
17:55
interviewed 12,000 people and they asked
17:58
a few basic questions in 2017 they
18:01
repeated this process only they doubled
18:03
or nearly doubled their efforts they
18:05
visited 22 countries and interviewed
18:08
22,000 people about their domestic
18:11
expectations and experiences and what
18:15
they found is that overwhelmingly the
18:18
things people value most the things
18:21
people want to build their home upon the
18:24
things people want more of regardless of
18:27
whether they’re living in an apartment
18:29
or a condo or a house or a rented room
18:32
somewhere what we desire most for things
18:36
comfort safety belonging love
18:43
comfort safety belonging love more than
18:49
flat-packed cheap Swedish furniture
18:53
people want belonging safety comfort and
18:59
love
19:02
that’s what they want friends that’s
19:04
what your kids want that’s what your
19:05
spouse wants this Christmas isn’t that
19:09
what you want like down deep in your
19:11
soul more than all this stuff more than
19:14
all these new gadgets and gizmos more
19:17
than a new wardrobe
19:18
more than new stuff for your house more
19:20
than a bunch of new toys wouldn’t you
19:21
agree that the things you value most in
19:24
life are things like comfort safety
19:26
belonging in love in Luke chapter 12
19:30
Jesus continues to stop his warning
19:33
about you and I watching out for all
19:35
these forms of greed that invade our
19:38
life he tells a story about a guy who
19:40
builds this incredible barn it’s like
19:44
he’s got a barn but he’s got so much
19:47
stuff his barn isn’t big enough now if
19:50
Jesus were telling this story by the way
19:52
today in the 21st century he would say
19:54
what not a barn but a garage right
19:57
because there are a lot of us who can’t
19:58
park cars in our garage because we have
20:01
so much stuff what’s more once those
20:04
barns those garages are packed out we go
20:06
and we lease storage units right we get
20:09
sheds in the back yard we are packed
20:11
full of stuff so Jesus tells the story
20:14
about this guy who builds on to his
20:16
garage and packs it full and at the end
20:19
of the day he sits back and he takes
20:22
life easy thinks I’ve got so much I’ve
20:24
got all that I need I am doing so well
20:26
for myself all along he didn’t realize
20:28
that he was terminally ill and his life
20:31
would be taken from him that very night
20:34
so notice he had stored up all these
20:36
things she acquired all this stuff and
20:39
yet it didn’t really mean anything it
20:41
didn’t mean anything cuz I had no
20:42
eternal significance and when he died he
20:45
ultimately couldn’t take
20:47
with him you see what Jesus would tell
20:50
you an i today is that we need to invest
20:53
our lives not in these material
20:56
temporary things but in these in
20:57
material eternal things check out what
21:01
Jesus says in Matthew chapter 6 as he’s
21:03
speaking with his disciples Matthew
21:05
chapter 6 verses 19 and 20 Jesus is
21:09
having this conversation and here’s what
21:11
he says don’t store up treasures here on
21:14
earth where moths eat them and rust
21:16
destroys them and where thieves break in
21:18
and steal
21:20
Jesus has a different proposition verse
21:22
20 he says stored treasures in heaven
21:25
where moths and rust cannot destroy and
21:28
thieves do not break in and steal so in
21:31
other words Jesus says rather than
21:33
building on to your garage rather than
21:35
adding rooms to your mini mansion why
21:39
not invest in something that yes may be
21:42
immaterial but it’s far more eternal why
21:45
not collect experiences particularly
21:48
ones that point us to the gospel and
21:50
that touch and connect with others
21:54
rather than things I can testify to this
21:58
truth firsthand this past week something
22:01
happened that was a little bit shocking
22:03
to me when I was a kid I loved
22:06
Ghostbusters
22:09
Ghostbusters I collected all these
22:11
Ghostbusters toys anytime I got birthday
22:13
money or Christmas money I ran out and I
22:15
bought some kind of Ghostbusters toy I
22:18
was convinced I was gonna be a
22:19
Ghostbuster one day even though I was
22:21
scared of the dark
22:22
right it’s like it was my life’s calling
22:24
and I loved it well a couple years ago
22:26
my mom went through that stage where she
22:28
started emptying out her attic and
22:30
blessing all of our family with our
22:33
stuff
22:34
because they were downsizing and she
22:37
gave me totes on top of totes of just
22:40
stuff filled with like you know
22:42
Ghostbusters paraphernalia that I had
22:44
acquired over the years as a kid and
22:46
she’s like hey you need to take this and
22:48
I’m looking at it and I stacked up in my
22:50
garage for a little while Linds like
22:52
Ryan what are you going to do with all
22:54
these totes of Ghostbuster things and
22:56
I’m like oh man I don’t know let me
22:58
think about it I didn’t want to just get
22:59
rid of it you know because it meant
23:01
something to me
23:02
it was nostalgic it was something I had
23:04
as a child had that insurance that kind
23:07
of value and at the same time I didn’t
23:08
need it I didn’t want it I couldn’t keep
23:10
it I certainly couldn’t let it collect
23:11
dust in my garage and so I had a buddy
23:13
who was a collector of 1980s toys and so
23:17
I gave him all these toys he loved it he
23:20
enjoyed it he displayed it and he had it
23:23
stored in his garage well last week his
23:26
garage burnt down to the ground and I
23:30
just feel awful for the guy he had this
23:32
huge collection and he lost every single
23:34
thing and as I’m writing the sermon that
23:36
came to my mind this thought you know
23:39
don’t store up treasures on earth where
23:42
moth and rust destroy where thieves
23:45
break in and steal where fire burns it
23:47
down to the ground for instance where
23:50
are you storing your treasure today
23:53
think about this maybe you have an
23:55
experience of maybe you can relate in
23:57
some way to things that you’ve
23:58
accumulated over the years especially
24:00
here at Christmastime
24:01
there’s actually a website called
24:03
statistic brain that’s been tracking
24:04
there was popular gifts by year for
24:07
example in 1983 it was a Cabbage Patch
24:10
at all maybe some of you remember that
24:11
maybe some of you waited in line for a
24:13
Cabbage Patch doll in 1985 it was a
24:16
pound puppy I had a pound puppy
24:19
I had this pound puppy they’re awesome
24:21
all right in 1989 it was a Nintendo
24:24
Gameboy later on 1995 it was beanie
24:29
babies a bunch of 50 year old people
24:30
buying stuffed animals thank you in 1996
24:33
it was a Tickle Me Elmo now quick survey
24:36
how many of you either
24:38
owned one of these gifts or bought one
24:40
all right show fans yeah most of you
24:43
most of you now keep your hands up keep
24:45
your hands up leave your hand up if you
24:47
still have one of these things in your
24:49
possession yeah not many of you right
24:51
not many of you where’s that stuff at
24:53
right it went to a thrift store in
24:55
Indianapolis or Avon you know it’s
24:58
rotting in a garbage dump on Kentucky
25:00
Avenue it’s in your mom’s attic
25:02
somewhere and a tote you’ve got no idea
25:05
where this stuff is but you invested so
25:07
much of your life in it every year you
25:10
were consumed in consumption Jesus
25:13
question for us and this parable is
25:15
simple and straightforward its argue
25:17
accumulated on earth what you cannot
25:19
keep or you’re investing in heaven which
25:22
you cannot lose
25:26
what would your Christmas buying habits
25:28
your Christmas gift-giving say about you
25:32
are you accumulating on earth what you
25:35
cannot keep are you investing in heaven
25:39
what you can not loose maybe you think
25:44
wait a second guess if I stop you know
25:48
if I go to Target or a Walmart and I’m
25:50
start making some returns Ryan you know
25:53
my kids are gonna really miss out you
25:56
know fear of missing out it’s a real
25:57
thing FOMO you know if we all stopped by
26:00
and if we all started living with less
26:03
than our economy would collapse so I’m
26:05
just a good citizen here right
26:07
I’m just doing my patriotic duty maybe
26:11
you think that you’d be missing out if
26:13
you stopped if you stepped aside from
26:16
all the consumption check out what Jesus
26:18
says in Matthew chapter 6 verse 33 as he
26:21
continues his thought he says seek the
26:24
kingdom of God above all else so this
26:26
Christmas before you go gift shopping
26:28
before you go party before you do your
26:31
Christmas thing in your traditions Jesus
26:32
says look just seek the kingdom of God
26:34
first above all else and live
26:37
righteously so what’s that mean that
26:39
means we live according to what we
26:40
believe that means all these Kingdom
26:42
principles we lived them out in life and
26:43
Jesus says and he will give you
26:46
everything you need so if you’re afraid
26:48
of missing out if you’re afraid that
26:50
your children are gonna be disappointed
26:51
Jesus’s think again seek first my
26:53
kingdom that will bring you true joy and
26:57
now be true joy to you I think about the
27:00
story of Mary as Shepherds and later on
27:03
Wiseman came and and they were before
27:06
Jesus though the wise men here’s the
27:09
test okay
27:10
the wise men brought Jesus three
27:12
different kinds of gifts there weren’t
27:13
necessarily three wise men three kings
27:15
but they brought three different kinds
27:17
of gifts remember what they are they
27:18
were gold frankincense and myrrh right
27:23
expensive extravagant gifts that had
27:26
incredible value and yet the story says
27:28
that the thing meri valued most was that
27:31
they bowed down and worshiped her son
27:34
back a little while earlier when the
27:37
Shepherd’s came before Jesus and and
27:38
they had heard a song of the Angelus in’
27:41
and they bowed down before Jesus it says
27:43
that Mary stored these things in her
27:45
heart it was the experience that she
27:47
collected that reminded her of her son’s
27:50
to Vinit II not a bunch of stuff not a
27:53
bunch of things so how can we live
27:55
according to that right how can we seek
27:56
first God’s kingdom and live righteously
27:59
this season well I want to present to
28:02
you just two simple ideas as we close
28:04
today just two ways that you can live a
28:08
little bit more according to the gospel
28:10
and put Jesus at the center of your
28:11
season and first and foremost that is to
28:13
be grateful that is to be grateful
28:15
who who believes we have a great God you
28:17
might believe we have a great God say
28:19
Amen if you believe a great God Amen
28:21
right like we have a great God and today
28:23
you you woke up and I know some of you
28:25
you’ve got some circumstances that
28:27
aren’t that favourable and yet you put
28:29
your feet on the ground you got out of
28:30
bed and you got to church today because
28:32
there is a God who loved you so much
28:34
that he would sacrifice his one and only
28:36
Son for you and he doesn’t ask us to
28:39
respond to him and guilt to come
28:41
groveling but simply just to be grateful
28:43
just to be grateful and live according
28:46
to our gratefulness so when was the last
28:47
time you just said God thank you God
28:50
thank you because I said as a man as a
28:53
husband as as a father
28:55
frankly I want to say thank you more I
28:59
want to focus more on all that God has
29:02
given me rather than fixating on those
29:04
little things I don’t have in my life
29:06
and I want my kids I want my spouse with
29:08
my family I want my church to do
29:10
you the same I want to say thank you man
29:12
was the last time just said thank you
29:14
God for my salvation once last time you
29:16
looked at someone you loved and you just
29:19
said thank you thank you for being you
29:21
in fact go and look to your left here
29:23
right right now just say thank you for
29:24
being you to someone can you do that
29:26
really quick thank you for being you
29:28
right now we had a couple of couples who
29:31
were kissing in first service after that
29:34
happened so if I increase your love life
29:37
in any way you can give me a
29:39
proportionate Christmas gift okay
29:40
you’re welcome all right pervs all right
29:44
so be grateful tell people in your life
29:48
thank you listen to what the Apostle
29:50
Paul says 1st Thessalonians chapter 5 he
29:53
says be thankful in all circumstances
29:55
for this is God’s will for you and
29:59
what’s God’s will for my life I don’t
30:01
know but it starts with just being
30:03
thankful thankful for what God has done
30:05
thankful for what God has given you you
30:06
want to be in the center of God’s
30:07
perfect pleasing will man be thankful be
30:11
thankful Paul says that’s a part of
30:14
God’s will that’s a part of God’s will
30:15
for those of you who belong to Christ
30:17
Jesus be grateful for all that God has
30:20
given you be thankful here’s the second
30:21
thing you can do you can be generous so
30:24
first you can be thankful you can be
30:26
grateful second you can be generous the
30:28
book of Acts Acts chapter 20 verse 35
30:30
records this pivotal moment in the life
30:32
of Christ in which he says it is more
30:34
blessed to give than to receive it’s
30:37
more blessed to give than it is to
30:39
receive do you believe that then be
30:41
generous when we are generous for
30:43
ultimately reflecting God’s attitude his
30:46
heart toward us because our God is a
30:48
generous God our God who is a God who
30:50
gave it all away and so some of you were
30:53
extremely generous this Christmas
30:54
because you jumped in and you joined in
30:56
with us here at the church through the
30:57
angel tree and we blessed like a hundred
30:59
kids or families that’s just some
31:01
incredible number with gifts you weren’t
31:04
going to be able to buy gifts for
31:05
themselves some of you you sponsor
31:07
children through compassion
31:08
International or World Vision some of
31:10
you even sponsored children at the tea
31:12
bukhan score church is building a
31:13
Christian school on top of a mountain in
31:15
T Buchan Haiti
31:17
had been impossible to build for years
31:19
it’s almost built some of you sponsored
31:21
children at the t book on school in fact
31:23
on short-term mission trips you’ve been
31:24
able when you’ve been able to go and see
31:26
them it’s like thirty dollars a month
31:27
that provides kids with tuition a
31:30
uniform access to medical care a meal a
31:33
day and a whole lot of love from an
31:35
incredible family of teachers like some
31:38
of you you’re practicing generosity
31:40
already and maybe you could you know
31:42
point your generosity a little bit
31:44
different or or maybe you could practice
31:46
a little bit more and some of you you’re
31:47
just lost in these the consumption you
31:50
know why not just stop right now
31:53
and say this is ridiculous it’s dividing
31:57
my attention and there are things that
31:58
matter more like giving people my time
32:00
and my infection and pointing them to
32:03
the gospel why not have that
32:04
conversation with your spouse today why
32:06
not have that conversation with your
32:07
kids today about what Christmas is going
32:09
to look like I know people who take time
32:11
this time of the year not to go shopping
32:14
but to go serving to go giving to give
32:17
to those people who have not Jesus
32:19
question for us is are you accumulating
32:23
on earth well you cannot keep or are you
32:27
investing in heaven but you cannot lose
32:30
it’s my challenge make Jesus the center
32:34
of your season by investing investing in
32:38
heaven but you cannot lose let’s bow our
32:40
heads let’s close our eyes Lord God and
32:43
father we
