00:00
well hey I am excited that you are here
00:04
today because it is the start not only
00:05
of a new sermon series but a new season
00:08
called 21 days of Prayer I want to start
00:11
a new tradition here at our church every
00:13
January I want us just to start the year
00:15
off by praying as a church if you don’t
00:18
have a prayer habit this is a great time
00:20
for you to develop one as we give you
00:23
the resources you’ll need to do that
00:25
also we want to be praying together
00:27
specifically for Ben Davis Christian
00:30
Church and God’s vision for it our
00:33
mission here on the west side of
00:34
Indianapolis and beyond and so we have
00:37
given you all kinds of resources to help
00:39
you pray for the next 21 days with us
00:42
here at the church you can get a lot of
00:44
those resources by the way if you didn’t
00:47
pick up any on your way out or if you
00:49
happen to lose them at BDCC.org / 21days
00:52
we’re simply by going to the prayer
00:54
link at the top of the page and clicking
00:56
21 days of prayer everything that we
00:59
have for you is going to be available
01:01
there in fact I know we have been giving
01:03
out reading guides daily devotionals are
01:06
written by our prayer team members I’m
01:09
so proud of them and thankful that they
01:11
contributed to that effort but I can
01:13
already tell you that everyone was so
01:15
excited about those daily reading guides
01:18
and devotionals that we have given out
01:20
well over a hundred already and so we’re
01:23
running low on those so there should be
01:26
a copy of that and the pew on the
01:28
outside aisle if you are running low if
01:31
there’s not enough for everybody there
01:33
are gonna be a few for you to pick up at
01:34
next on your way out you can also go to
01:37
the website and you can get those daily
01:41
readings there every night at midnight
01:44
it’s gonna automatically post the day’s
01:47
reading and the day
01:49
devotional right there on the website so
01:51
you can do that also
01:53
if you’re someone like me who needs an
01:56
occasional kick in the pants okay you
01:58
can sign up for text message reminders
02:00
you can do that right now if you’d like
02:03
we don’t mind get out your cell phone
02:04
text pray twenty one to five five five
02:08
eight eight eight and you will get a
02:11
daily text message reminder every
02:14
weekday around noon reminding you to
02:17
pray and giving you a link specifically
02:20
to that day’s reading so that you won’t
02:23
miss out last but not least we have a
02:25
prayer list by the time we’re done
02:28
talking about prayer in just a few weeks
02:30
one thing I’m going to challenge you to
02:32
do is to have your own personal prayer
02:34
journal or a prayer list in which you
02:37
can look back and you can see the many
02:39
ways that God has been faithful you can
02:41
also remind yourself what needs
02:43
intentional focus in your life we’re
02:46
gonna give you not only a template for a
02:48
prayer list in the coming weeks but
02:50
right now we’re gonna give you a
02:52
template a specific prayer list for our
02:54
church’s prayer needs and hopefully you
02:56
got this when you walked in this morning
02:58
if not I know there are plenty more of
03:00
these on your way out you can grab these
03:02
at the doors just a two-sided sheet here
03:05
and it says how you can pray for your
03:07
church on the front of that sheet there
03:08
are five specific prayer needs that
03:11
we’re laying out before our congregation
03:13
here in the new year things that we know
03:15
are gonna be going on at Ben Davis
03:17
Christian Church in 2019
03:18
there are also 20 ways that you can pray
03:21
daily for your church for your brothers
03:24
and sisters in Christ for the ministers
03:26
for our missionaries and on down the
03:28
list and so that gives you full ideas
03:30
and on the backside we even list out all
03:32
of our staff and our elders so that if
03:34
you forget from time to time who works
03:37
here or who’s leading or maybe you’re
03:40
new and you want to be a part of what
03:43
God is doing here at the church but you
03:44
don’t know everyone yet that’s a great
03:47
resource for you too so take that home
03:49
with you and
03:51
des commits to praying for your church
03:54
this week next week we’re gonna fast for
03:56
our church I’m gonna talk to you about
03:57
fasting we have a fasting guide ready
04:00
for you that might be a new concept to
04:02
some of us to some of us it might be
04:03
something we’ve tried but failed or
04:05
never dare try at all we’re gonna do
04:07
this thing together and then in the
04:09
third week we’re gonna go to God and we
04:12
are going to not only cast our cares
04:15
upon him but we are going to carry one
04:17
another’s burdens by committing to
04:19
praying for one another we’re gonna pray
04:21
for healing for folks who need that
04:23
we’re gonna pray for freedom from the
04:26
bondage to sin to some folks who need
04:28
that for those of us who are hurting or
04:30
who are just suffering we’re in a
04:32
difficult season of life we’re gonna
04:34
carry one another’s burdens and so
04:35
fulfill the law of Christ I am excited
04:39
about the next 21 days and the things
04:42
that God is going to do here at our
04:43
church and so I want you to be a part of
04:46
that okay so commit yourselves to that
04:47
right now as we begin this whole thing I
04:50
wanted to start off by praying with you
04:52
if we can do that okay so let’s go to
04:55
God in prayer and start off the season
04:57
21 days of Prayer together let’s pray
04:58
father God we love you so very much we
05:01
thank you not only for the day that
05:04
you’ve made but the church that you’ve
05:05
bought with the blood of Christ god we
05:07
are truly excited that we can be here in
05:13
this place praying for one another
05:16
praying for a church that has blessed us
05:19
and that you have so much in store for
05:22
God on our prayer list we have five
05:24
things that were praying specifically
05:26
over and I want to kick off the season
05:28
by bringing these things right now
05:30
before your throne God you say in your
05:33
word that we have full access to your
05:35
throne by way of Jesus Christ and so we
05:37
come now through the blood of Jesus God
05:39
asking you to bless our congregation God
05:43
as we begin a new partnership to create
05:47
a healthy church by creating a healthy
05:50
leadership through e to an effective
05:53
elders God my prayer is that you would
05:54
bless that and you
05:55
less than men who lead our church God my
05:58
prayer as we seek to hire a student
06:00
pastors that you would bless that
06:02
ministry team that is seeking to find
06:05
that next person to lead our middle and
06:08
high school students God as we enter
06:11
into a new season of strategic plan and
06:13
god we look back and we see how faithful
06:15
you’ve been god we see an examples of
06:17
Scripture how the disciples and how the
06:20
Apostles in house Paul specifically had
06:22
a strategic plan for reaching the entire
06:25
world with the gospel and so Lord God we
06:28
want to have a similar plan and we want
06:30
to lay it before you and ask you to
06:31
inspire it God we know that we have
06:34
financial challenges ahead here in the
06:36
new year and so God is that appears on
06:38
our prayer list we want to approach you
06:40
in faith knowing that you will provide
06:42
for us God in my prayer now is that you
06:44
bless us financially that you bless us
06:47
to be blessings and that things don’t
06:50
stop here at Ben Davis Christian Church
06:52
but that we ultimately serve as a
06:53
pipeline to the whole world of what you
06:56
intend to do in the way you intend to
06:58
bless it goddess the T bukhan school
07:00
comes to completion we’re so excited for
07:02
this 250 kids that staff that’s going to
07:06
open up their school building in June we
07:08
pray for that community that it would
07:10
truly become a city on a hill that
07:13
shines a light for all Haiti to see who
07:16
you are and what you’ve done father and
07:18
my prayer is that you would help us to
07:20
finish that project on-time and
07:22
on-budget God we lift these things
07:25
before you now we present our church to
07:28
you God now when we ask you to bless it
07:31
in this new year bless us father we love
07:34
you and we thank you for Jesus Christ in
07:36
whose name we pray and everybody said
07:39
all right well hey we are going to start
07:42
off our new sermon series called pray
07:44
first and I don’t know if you knew this
07:45
or not but Amazon actually keeps a
07:49
record of all of the passages paragraphs
07:55
sentences that you highlight in your
07:57
e-reader so I download a lot of e-books
08:00
and sermon study or just for my own
08:02
personal reading and I’ve been
08:04
highlighting for years never knowing
08:06
that all along Amazon has been keeping
08:09
track of what I’ve been marking up and
08:12
they’ve been doing this as well in the
08:14
Bible’s that are downloaded on their
08:16
e-readers so they know which verses are
08:18
the most popular verses in all the Bible
08:21
and if you were to ask me what the most
08:23
highlighted verse in the Bible would be
08:25
I would say maybe Psalm 23 the Lord is
08:27
my shepherd or john 3:16 for God so
08:29
loved the world you know these are those
08:32
flagship mainstay Bible verses that we
08:36
all kind of know and love and cherish in
08:38
our faith but actually according to
08:41
Amazon the most high lighted verse and
08:44
all the Bible comes from the book of
08:46
Philippians in Philippians chapter 4 and
08:49
verse 6 this is what it says don’t worry
08:52
about anything instead pray about
08:56
everything tell god what you need and
08:59
thank him for all that he has done in
09:02
other words when your mind is racing
09:04
when your heart is pounding when you’re
09:06
worried you can go directly to the
09:09
throne room of God you can present your
09:12
worries to him Paul says don’t worry
09:15
about things instead pray about those
09:18
things tell God exactly what it is on
09:21
your mind and thank him for what he’s
09:22
doing here’s what he says next then you
09:24
will experience God’s
09:27
which exceeds anything we can understand
09:31
he goes on to say his piece will guard
09:34
your hearts and minds as you live in
09:36
Christ Jesus you know sometimes I wake
09:40
up in the middle of the night and my
09:43
mind is occupied by worry I worry about
09:47
everything I worry about my wife and my
09:51
kids I worry about our house I worry
09:54
about our future I worry about you I
09:57
worry about our church and when I start
10:00
to realize that God in fact has the
10:03
whole world in his hands and that he has
10:05
covered you and he’s covered me and he’s
10:07
covered my family in my home I start to
10:10
invent and innovate all new aspects in
10:13
ways that I can worry you know I think
10:16
sometimes we get occupied by worry we
10:20
try to solve our problems ourselves and
10:22
when we’re at the end of our rope we say
10:25
all we can do now is what wait and pray
10:28
all we can do now is pray as though
10:31
that’s our last resort it’s tempting to
10:34
treat prayer as though it’s a last line
10:37
of defense we complain about our
10:39
problems we spend the majority of our
10:41
time trying to figure out what we can do
10:43
to solve them we do everything except
10:46
the one thing we are commanded to do in
10:50
Scripture and that is to pray about
10:54
everything right what are we to do were
10:56
to pray about what
10:58
everything in other words we are to pray
11:01
first in any and all circumstances pray
11:04
first before you invest your money
11:06
before you buy something significant or
11:09
even miniscule pray first is what Paul
11:12
is saying before you post that reply on
11:15
social media pray first before you open
11:18
your email in the morning pray first
11:21
before you start the car in the morning
11:23
pray first before you have that
11:25
conversation pray first before you lie
11:27
down in bed pray first before you get
11:30
into that relationship pray first we
11:33
tend to treat prayer as a last resort
11:36
but God wants prayer to be our first
11:40
response we pray when there’s nothing
11:42
else we can do but God wants us to pray
11:46
before we do anything at all and that’s
11:49
what we’re gonna be talking about for
11:51
the next three weeks what would it look
11:53
like if we began to pray first in any
11:56
and all circumstances in our lives this
11:59
is actually an example given to us by
12:02
Jesus in his own life we see it
12:04
specifically in Matthew chapter 6 and
12:06
Luke chapter 11 and this morning I want
12:09
to invite you to go ahead and get out
12:10
your Bible and to turn to Luke chapter
12:12
11 with me that’s located on page 793 of
12:16
the Bible that’s right in front of your
12:18
seats Luke chapter 11 let’s go there
12:21
together this morning prayer is perhaps
12:24
the most powerful weapon by the way that
12:27
God has given you but the problem is is
12:29
that you and I we don’t always know how
12:31
to pray I don’t think we fully
12:33
understand prayer and that for one
12:35
reason or another keeps us from praying
12:37
if we really understood all that God has
12:40
for us in the potential of prayer I
12:41
think we would find ourselves praying
12:43
more consistently and the disciples of
12:46
Jesus they had the same strain in their
12:49
lives they were familiar with prayer
12:51
they had been taught prayer all their
12:53
lives they had been given prayers to
12:56
recite but they were
12:57
of the prayers of the Torah but Jesus
13:00
prayed with a different kind of
13:02
authority and an authenticity that had
13:04
never been seen before it was as though
13:07
God was listening that he was near and
13:11
that Jesus had a real relationship with
13:13
him and so the disciples come to Jesus
13:16
and they asked him this one question and
13:19
it might just be a question that we find
13:21
ourselves asking today Luke chapter 11
13:23
and verse one it says one day Jesus was
13:26
praying in a certain place we’re gonna
13:27
talk about that a little bit next week
13:29
we find Jesus praying at a specific time
13:31
in a specific place he was interrupted
13:34
he could pray absolutely anytime and
13:37
anywhere but he had a dedicated time and
13:40
place in his life in which he would pray
13:42
and this is what it says next when he
13:44
finished one of his disciples said to
13:47
him Lord teach us to do what to pray
13:51
just as John taught his disciples in
13:55
other words there are all these other
13:56
rabbis in the ancient Near East
13:59
including John the Baptist and they were
14:01
teaching their disciples how to pray
14:03
people wondered Jesus what’s your
14:05
specific spin on prayer but I think they
14:08
also saw something in Jesus that made
14:11
his prayer life stand apart from all the
14:14
rest and they wanted to know about it
14:16
they wanted to know Jesus what is it
14:18
that makes your prayer so different we
14:20
don’t just want to know how to pray we
14:23
want to know how to pray like you and so
14:27
Jesus gives his disciples a model prayer
14:30
we call it the Lord’s Prayer you can
14:32
read the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew
14:33
chapter 6 in an expanded version we’re
14:36
gonna read Luke
14:37
Luke’s twist on the Lord’s Prayer it’s a
14:40
more condensed version okay I believe
14:42
these are two separate occasions Jesus
14:46
keep in mind was a teacher he was a
14:47
preacher sometimes when I go preach
14:49
somewhere else
14:50
I use sermons that I’ve already preached
14:52
to you and that’s what Jesus I believe
14:54
is doing he’s using a past teach
14:58
and he has a different audience and so
15:00
he’s using a condensed version and so
15:02
this version might sound or be missing
15:05
some parts and that you if you’ve heard
15:07
the Lord’s Prayer before you might pick
15:09
up on that like wait a second it’s
15:10
missing that line well understand so
15:11
Luke’s version is a condensed version so
15:14
Jesus gives them this model prayer now
15:16
understand at the same time that this is
15:18
to serve as the framework or the
15:21
foundation of our prayer it’s not
15:23
something that we recite there’s nothing
15:26
specifically magical about the Lord’s
15:29
Prayer Jesus uses it as a skeleton for
15:32
teaching all the things that you and I
15:35
could say or do to lift up our requests
15:37
to our Father God understand this is not
15:41
something that is intended to be
15:43
repeated over and over again into
15:45
monotony but if you’re new believer if
15:47
you’re just starting out on how to pray
15:49
it’s a great place to start that’s how
15:51
Jesus intended for it to be used so
15:53
here’s what he says in verse 2 it says
15:55
he said to them when you pray say father
15:59
now that’s important if you’ve got your
16:01
Bible highlight that underline that
16:03
because everything that follows is
16:05
hinged on that first part of the prayer
16:09
father hallowed be your name your
16:13
kingdom come give us each day our daily
16:18
bread for
16:20
give us our sins as we also forgive
16:23
everyone who sins against us and lead us
16:27
not into temptation
16:30
so that’s Jesus Jesus it’s okay here you
16:32
go you want to learn how to brake you
16:34
want to pray like me pray like this and
16:37
Jesus gives them a prayer in less than
16:39
40 words and four sentences
16:42
it is beautifully simple there is
16:45
nothing pretentious about it it is
16:47
completely approachable you can even
16:49
memorize it and use it as a framework or
16:52
a foundation for your own prayer life
16:55
but notice how Jesus begins his prayer
16:58
with a single statement and that is what
17:01
you’re supposed to highlight it you
17:02
ready
17:03
you got this father that’s everything in
17:06
prayer this is a new way of praying by
17:09
the ways Jesus introduces this concept
17:11
to his disciples you see friends if you
17:14
have faith in Christ you are now a son
17:18
or a daughter of God God became your
17:22
father when you believed the gospel
17:25
there is the question does God hear the
17:28
prayers of unbelievers I don’t know that
17:31
I’m really secure in my answer to that
17:33
but I know this if you believed the
17:35
gospel then the book of Hebrews says you
17:38
have full access to God there is nothing
17:40
to restrict you you can approach him as
17:43
a son or a daughter would approach his
17:46
or her father that’s how confidently you
17:49
can come before God today and prayer of
17:52
course that word father is loaded with a
17:55
lot of preconceived notions for some of
17:58
us because some of us grew up in a home
18:00
where we had the ideal dad some of us
18:03
had a less than ideal dad some of us had
18:06
no dad at all
18:08
and so understanding God through a
18:10
paternalistic relationship is a little
18:13
bit
18:14
of a difficulty for us wait you had to
18:16
do some mental gymnastics there are some
18:18
barriers than between us and God that we
18:20
had to begin to break down understanding
18:23
that he’s not an earthly father he’s a
18:26
heavenly one that God is the father that
18:29
should have always been God is the
18:31
perfect father what’s more is the way
18:35
Jesus identifies his father and Greek
18:38
the word that is used here is Pater it
18:41
means literally Father but Jesus would
18:43
have spoken an aramaic and as she spoke
18:46
an aramaic Jesus uses the word Abba Abba
18:50
is the Aramaic equivalent of the English
18:54
dad or daddy
18:56
so Jesus literally approaches God the
18:59
Father by saying hey Dad hey daddy even
19:03
it’s an affectionate term in other words
19:05
Jesus was showing us that in him all
19:08
barriers were removed between us and God
19:11
that we had full unrestricted access
19:13
that we could approach him like my
19:15
children approach me we could come to
19:18
God with that kind of audacity and
19:20
confidence and even comfort we could
19:23
know that the father cares full well
19:25
about us and if that is true if God is
19:29
our Father
19:30
if he is our dad or even our daddy then
19:33
that ultimately means that no prayer
19:36
could possibly be dumb I just want my
19:39
kids to talk to me in fact I’ll be
19:41
honest with you as as a dad as my kids
19:43
get a little bit bigger and a little bit
19:45
more cool I’m realizing that they talk a
19:49
little less and less to me they used to
19:51
be open books and now when I asked them
19:53
how their day was they say what
19:55
fine you are already experienced in this
19:58
right may God doesn’t desire that kind
20:01
of relationship with his children he
20:03
wants openness right
20:04
God wants to know your requests and with
20:06
that in mind there’s no prayer request
20:09
no prayer that is done there’s no wrong
20:11
way to pray before your father God you
20:15
can just go to him that means you can
20:17
pray to him about your day about the
20:19
things that are happening when you’re
20:20
lonely when you feel as though nothing
20:23
is going your way you can go straight to
20:25
your father God when things are good and
20:27
you just want to tell someone about it
20:28
you can start talking to your father God
20:30
you can pray to God about your
20:32
relationships you can pray to God about
20:35
your mama’s drama you can pray to God
20:38
about your friends or even the trashman
20:41
you can pray to God about absolutely
20:43
anything anywhere any time because God
20:47
is a father he is a dad he is a daddy
20:53
and I think we fall into the monotony of
20:56
saying God loves you God loves me God
20:57
loves us but here’s a greater truth God
21:00
not only loves you he actually likes you
21:05
yeah think about that God not only loves
21:08
you he actually likes you
21:10
regardless of how your year has started
21:13
regardless of how you finished last year
21:15
whether you finish last year in a rehab
21:17
in the hole whether things were good or
21:21
things were bad
21:23
actually likes you and God wants to hear
21:27
from you just as I want to hear from my
21:29
children inference God desires to hear a
21:32
word from you that means that we can go
21:35
to God and we can pray to him when we’re
21:37
angry then what our soul is in shreds
21:40
and we’ve been hiding from God and
21:42
keeping things in secret we can be open
21:44
before him there is absolutely nothing
21:47
keeping us today from a conversation
21:50
with God if we believed the gospel and
21:54
our faith is in Christ you can pray for
21:56
good weather you can pray for your
21:57
financial situation you can even pray
22:00
for your daily bread why because prayer
22:03
is simply talking to God as a father as
22:06
a dad as a daddy too often we forget
22:10
that we make things far more complicated
22:13
than we need to and so Jesus starts off
22:16
this whole thing on prayer and he says
22:19
look it’s all about position prayer is
22:22
about position not whether you’re
22:24
kneeling or standing or sitting or
22:27
laying flat on your face but your
22:28
position before God have you been
22:32
adopted into the family of God have you
22:35
received sonship or daughter ship
22:36
through Jesus Christ you have a place at
22:39
his table because you’ve been brought in
22:42
to the family of God because you believe
22:44
the gospel if so there should be nothing
22:46
today keeping you from praying God wants
22:50
to hear your prayer you can pray about
22:52
anything simply because God is your
22:54
father now Jesus moves on and I’m gonna
22:57
confess something to you this week was a
23:00
short week and I’m gonna say that
23:02
writing a sermon on prayer was actually
23:04
one of the most difficult things I’ve
23:05
done not just this short year but even
23:08
all the lasts and it turned out to be a
23:10
really difficult topic because in this
23:12
room we have people who have been
23:14
praying all their lives we have people
23:16
who have not even started to pray yet we
23:18
have people who are brand-new in their
23:19
faith journey we have people who’ve been
23:21
on this journey for such a long time
23:23
when they’re way down the road and
23:24
people in between men how do we possibly
23:26
preach a message
23:28
that lands on prayer for everyone in the
23:32
rim and so rather than breaking down the
23:35
Lord’s Prayer line by line which I don’t
23:37
necessarily know that Jesus intended for
23:39
us to do I want to capture it in a
23:41
single thought that first we understand
23:45
our position in Christ and that we can
23:47
access God anytime anywhere about
23:51
anything at all and second I want to
23:53
capture the thought of the Lord’s Prayer
23:56
like in these requests that Jesus make
23:58
what is it that he is saying and what is
24:00
it exactly that he is telling us to do
24:03
I’m gonna break down the Lord’s Prayer
24:05
very quickly with you
24:06
Jesus says read these with me ready
24:09
hallowed be your name your kingdom come
24:12
now this one’s in Matthews it wasn’t in
24:15
Luke’s but we’re gonna include this
24:16
today your will be done he goes on give
24:20
us our daily bread forgive us our sins
24:24
lead us not into temptation so that’s
24:27
the basics of the Lord’s Prayer that’s
24:30
the break down now for the longest time
24:33
I read the Lord’s Prayer and I applied
24:35
acronyms to it there are two acronyms in
24:38
particularly that I’ve applied my whole
24:39
life to the Lord’s Prayer one is acts a
24:42
cts-v a in acts stands for adoration for
24:48
those of you for that another acronym
24:50
I’ve used is the acronym pray the P and
24:54
pray stands for prays in other words my
24:58
whole life I read the Lord’s Prayer and
25:00
I thought that we were to start praying
25:02
with praise with adoration with telling
25:06
God who he is and giving him glory in
25:08
that way I thought that’s what it meant
25:11
when we said how
25:13
be your name but I want you to take a
25:16
second look at this phrase hallowed be
25:19
your name I’m not saying that those
25:21
acronyms are wrong I’m not saying at all
25:24
that the wrong way to start a prayer is
25:26
in praising or adoring God in fact
25:29
that’s how I start most of my prayers
25:31
just reminding myself who God is and
25:34
what he’s done and worshiping him in
25:36
light of that but Jesus starts his pair
25:40
off with hallowed be your name not so
25:44
much a statement as much as it is a
25:47
request think about that for just a
25:50
moment Jesus doesn’t start off his
25:52
prayer with three statements about God
25:54
hallowed be your name your kingdom come
25:57
your will be done he starts off with
26:01
three requests followed by three kind of
26:05
you know self centric requests the us
26:08
part if you would right give us forgive
26:11
us lead us not into temptation but think
26:15
about this there’s just six requests
26:17
here changes how I pray the Lord’s
26:20
Prayer Jesus for most requests his first
26:24
prayer is God hallowed be your name
26:29
what’s that mean when we say something
26:30
is hallowed we mean it is sacred it is
26:34
holy it is set apart for a special
26:37
purpose you and I can’t make God’s name
26:39
holy God is already holy this is part of
26:43
his character yet in saying God hallowed
26:45
be your name we’re ranking a request of
26:48
ourselves in other words Jesus is saying
26:51
God you’re my father I have
26:53
position in you right standing I can
26:56
bring everything before you now and now
26:59
I want to bring everything to light
27:02
before you through this one
27:03
understanding that in everything I say
27:06
and do you should receive glory you
27:08
should receive glory in my life father
27:11
God hallowed be your name and everything
27:15
that I say and do may I bring glory
27:18
ultimate fulfillment of my life’s
27:20
purpose glory to you think about that
27:24
for just a moment now that does not mean
27:26
you cannot pray an honest prayer fact I
27:29
find myself praying honest prayers all
27:31
the time because God is my father in
27:34
fact a few years ago someone hurt me
27:36
very deeply in my life and I caught
27:38
myself praying very honest and raw
27:40
prayers before God talking to God about
27:43
that hurt frankly telling God what I
27:45
would like for him to do to that person
27:48
you know like God there are so many
27:51
things that you could do to this guy
27:52
that he deserves you would give me
27:55
justice you would vindicate me Father if
27:58
you would just do these things I would
27:59
pray that I would pray raw and honest
28:01
prayers and France there is nothing
28:03
wrong with that because God is first
28:04
here what father he’s your dad he’s your
28:08
daddy but as I pray and pray in light of
28:12
the Lord’s Prayer I realize that before
28:14
I say Amen I need to have this change of
28:18
heart see ask you out as you pray you
28:22
should ask God to change your heart I
28:25
get it you want to change the
28:26
circumstance you want to change that
28:28
person you want to change things but
28:30
often prayer changes you
28:33
and that’s often where God wants to
28:35
start and so when I pray and I pray an
28:38
angry prayer and I’m praying in the raw
28:40
and I say god this is what I want you to
28:42
do I want your name to be hallowed by
28:48
how I treat this person because they
28:50
have hurt me they have wounded me they
28:53
have said things against me and yet God
28:55
I want to leave these feelings here
28:58
before you so I can now go treat that
29:01
person in such a way that you would get
29:03
the glory and the honor and the fame
29:06
your name is do friends as sons and
29:09
daughters of God we have an obligation
29:11
to protect the family name and that’s
29:14
what Jesus is saying here that when we
29:16
pray we can say anything that we want to
29:19
and yet we should remember that our
29:21
souls purpose your life’s purpose is one
29:26
singular thing and that is to give glory
29:28
to God jesus prayed for God’s glory
29:32
first even before he prayed for his
29:35
daily bread even before he prayed for
29:38
God to forgive him now Jesus of course
29:41
didn’t need forgiveness but he was
29:42
giving us this example for ourselves so
29:44
even before you need God to forgive you
29:47
you you need God’s name to be hallowed
29:50
you need it to be sacred in your life
29:52
Jesus says you know even before you lead
29:56
us not into temptation we want more than
30:00
anything else more than life you know
30:02
more than the air we breathe for the
30:05
name of God to be famous throughout the
30:07
earth so and everything I say and do God
30:09
make this possible and me I love that
30:14
I love that that that changes the way I
30:16
pray that changes my understanding of
30:18
prayer and the Lord’s Prayer and what it
30:21
is that Jesus is saying cuz Jesus gives
30:24
us to these six requests and they range
30:27
from the physical and the material to
30:29
the spiritual and the emotional Jesus
30:32
encapsulate all of life here in the
30:35
Lord’s Prayer and this these few short
30:36
sins as he says look you can pray about
30:39
anything but in everything you do give
30:43
yourself to the will and the glory of
30:45
God God if it gives you glory give me my
30:49
daily bread when you provide for me make
30:51
people in my life see that you are good
30:55
and that you provide for me God I want
30:59
you to forgive me but I don’t want
31:00
people to see me as this upstanding
31:02
moral person I want them to see me for
31:05
who I am in light of you and that you
31:07
have given me grace and I want that to
31:09
give you full glory God God I know that
31:12
there is temptation in my life and there
31:14
are things I struggle with in your word
31:15
father it says that whenever I’m tempted
31:18
you always provide an exit in other
31:20
words God always provides an escape plan
31:23
but God helped me not to take the easy
31:24
way out and help it not to be so simple
31:27
sometimes that I don’t notice that or
31:29
other people don’t notice that help
31:31
people to see in me a supernatural
31:34
working so that your name is hallowed so
31:37
it is made holy that it is great and it
31:39
is famous and you are giving glory and
31:41
that Jesus is praised before all the
31:44
nations that every tongue tribe and
31:46
person on the planet Earth would praise
31:48
him on the day he returns help me father
31:51
in some way in these few moments I have
31:54
in the grand story of salvation to
31:55
contribute to that
31:57
that’s what prayer looks like it doesn’t
32:01
have to be complicated
32:02
it could simply be god I’m angry God I’m
32:05
worried God I have a specific need today
32:09
and God as I present these things to you
32:12
father helped me to see one way with
32:14
spiritual eyes that I can give you glory
32:19
and live according to your will you know
32:21
this wasn’t only something Jesus
32:23
preached this was ultimately something
32:26
he lived his life was his message in
32:30
fact throughout the Book of Luke Jesus
32:31
praised more prayers than anywhere else
32:34
in the entire gospel for example we get
32:38
to Luke chapter 3 at the very beginning
32:42
of Jesus ministry and after he was
32:44
baptized he is seen doing what praying
32:47
right Sunday school answers here
32:49
the answers are gonna be pray or praying
32:51
you just have to put you know the right
32:53
kind of future or past tense on it for
32:56
me okay so here you go I’m gonna I’m
32:57
gonna give you a softball in Luke
32:59
chapter 4 Jesus whole ministry gets
33:01
started right after Luke chapter 3 he’s
33:03
baptized he prays Luke chapter 4 he’s in
33:05
a showdown with the devil and the desert
33:08
sounds like a great Clint Eastwood movie
33:10
back in the day right and what does
33:13
Jesus do he prays he prays through the
33:16
entire confrontation by the time we get
33:19
to Luke chapter 5 everyone is clamoring
33:21
to see Jesus but look at what Jesus does
33:25
in order to give himself strength it
33:27
says but Jesus often withdrew to the
33:29
wilderness for prayer in some
33:31
translations two lonely places Jesus had
33:33
a specific place in specific time in
33:36
which he would pray Jesus in Luke
33:38
chapter six is preparing himself to call
33:41
his disciples come follow me Jesus then
33:44
I’ll make you fishers of men
33:46
but check out what Jesus does just
33:47
before that it says one day soon
33:49
afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to
33:51
do what pray and he did what he prayed
33:55
all night sometimes Jesus was a sprinter
33:59
and sometimes he was a marathon runner
34:00
sometimes he had prayed quick prayers
34:02
that took only a few moments and
34:04
sometimes he would pray all through
34:07
the night we get to Luke chapter nine
34:10
just a little bit further we have the
34:12
account of Peters confession of Jesus as
34:14
the Messiah the Son of the Living God
34:16
this is a really significant moment here
34:18
in the Bible and right before that I
34:20
want you to hear what Jesus was doing in
34:22
Luke chapter 9 verse 18 it says one day
34:24
Jesus left the crowds to do what pray
34:26
prayed alone only his disciples were
34:29
with him and he asked them who do people
34:31
say that I am a few moments later math
34:33
or Luke chapter 9 verse 28 Jesus takes
34:36
Peter James and John to a mountain and
34:38
to show them who he is in the
34:40
Transfiguration and it says about eight
34:42
days later Jesus took Peter John and
34:44
James on a mountain to do what to pray
34:47
hey you’ve already got this by the time
34:50
we get through look Luke Luke chapter 18
34:53
verse 1 Jesus starts to teach his
34:55
followers on how to pray persistently
34:58
and consistently in their lives
34:59
is this one day jesus told his disciples
35:01
a story to show them that they should
35:03
always do what pray and never give
35:07
finally we have one last example of
35:09
prayer in the life of Jesus he prays in
35:11
Gethsemane before he is arrested and
35:13
crucified Jesus is so concerned for what
35:18
is about to happen that he actually
35:20
sweats blood he is so stressed out that
35:24
his capillaries burst in he sweats blood
35:28
in Jesus prayer in that moment was for
35:31
the name of God to be hallowed it was to
35:35
protect
35:36
the family name Jesus / in that moment
35:40
was to do the will of God in his life
35:45
friends God wants us to pray before we
35:49
do anything at all think about that for
35:52
just a moment God wants you to pray
35:55
before you do anything at all
35:58
think about this in the life of Jesus
36:00
for just a moment we go to the book of
36:02
John John chapter 5 verse 19 it says so
36:05
Jesus explained I tell you the truth the
36:07
Son of God can do what nothing by
36:10
himself whatever the father does the son
36:13
also does John chapter 5 verse 30 Jesus
36:17
says I can do nothing on my own I carry
36:20
out the will of the one who sent me not
36:23
my own will here’s the crazy thing Jesus
36:28
literally said that he could do nothing
36:30
without prayer he could do nothing apart
36:33
from the will of God from the Halloween
36:36
of God’s name and that was his life’s
36:38
purpose and so here’s the simple
36:39
proposition I want to make to you today
36:42
if we can do nothing apart from God then
36:45
truly we can ultimately do nothing
36:48
without prayer we should be people of
36:52
Prayer if Jesus said hey I can’t do
36:55
anything without God I can’t do anything
36:58
without praying first then who are you
37:01
and I to say we
37:03
we should be characterized by
37:06
interruptions of Prayer that means that
37:10
when you wake up in the morning you
37:11
should pray first when you are kissing
37:14
your husband and your wife and you or
37:16
them your going off to work you should
37:18
be praying for them when your kids are
37:20
going off to school you should be
37:22
praying for them you should pray for God
37:25
to bless your day for God to open up
37:27
your eyes spiritually speaking you
37:29
should be asking for God to put people
37:32
in your path to whom you can witness you
37:34
should be praying about your finances
37:36
you should be praying about these small
37:37
decisions that you’re making throughout
37:39
the days you’re stumbling through your
37:41
kitchen in the morning you should say
37:42
God lead me today guiding me give me a
37:45
clear path that leads toward your
37:47
purpose and will for my life as you and
37:50
I progress as we go to work and we feel
37:52
stressed out when the paychecks aren’t
37:54
enough when our boss is a jerk we should
37:57
pray we should pray and when we crawl
38:00
into bed at night
38:01
we should pray because if we can do
38:04
nothing without God then we can’t do
38:07
anything without prayer let me ask you
38:12
it’s prayer essential to your life or is
38:15
it optional would you say today that you
38:19
are the kind of person who prays first
38:21
or is prayer to you a last resort
38:25
I want to change that over the coming
38:27
weeks
